Humbug – Arctic Monkeys
For the blokes from Sheffield, who till a few years back were making waves with their version of booty shake titled “You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, it seems surprising to see how little time they have taken to move out of that slot. Arctic Monkeys, if nothing, could be termed as one of that phenomenon which plays a part in altering the course of history. And though it’s unlikely there would be anything else in their lives, which would make them as big again, their latest album “Humbug” would definitely be one of their works which would be remembered as one which changed the course of their musical direction. After all, making the transition from chart topping club friendly tunes to somber tales of life’s lessons isn’t easy within the span of two albums. That’s exactly what Arctic Monkeys have accomplished here. The down tempo step of “My Propeller” easily sets the tone for what follows. Most of which is in a similar vein, with “Potion Approaching”, “Dangerous Animals” and “Crying Lightning” – each of which are set to similar standards, and define an absolutely novel aspect of the lads not seen or heard before. A slight departure from the norm occurs on “Pretty Visitors” with a somewhat up tempo beat, reminding you of their earlier work. The guitar tones are definitely much thicker and much more mature, much of the credit for which goes to Queen of Stone Age’s Josh Homme for production.
